Kinda off-topic
« on: April 01, 2007, 11:05:19 am »
I've been struggling (swearing at) my WRK-54G Linksys wireless router for about a year now.  I dislike retail-level routers with a passion (about 50% of the support questions @ work have to do with them, and we don't even provide support for them) because they're unreliable.  I didn't know HOW unreliable they could be... my WRK router would disconnect about twice a day, sometimes better and sometimes worse.

So I picked up a D-Link DIR-625 at the recommendation of one of my employees and set it up today.  What a world of difference, it feels like I doubled the speed of my Internet connection (oh, download speed is the same, but interactivity is WAY better) and so far no other problems.  Wireless range tripled or better, I can sit at my bar with an "excellent" signal now, where the WRK had a "low" signal.

Thought I'd share in case anyone is looking at one of these things.  BTW, whatever you do, don't by a WRK-54G.  After the fact I've discovered that not only is it a black sheep in Linksys' family, there are no alternative software loads like there are for the WRT-54G.  That one little letter makes all the difference.

And that would be why I went old school and stayed away from wireless..  well that and Mags already had a router so.... just went with it.  8)

Hey shaman, I am sure you can recall all of the problems we have with the link sys. JUNK at work....the Tranzio stuff has been working great ...not one problem.
I have some link Sys. equipment at home as well and have had all kinds of problems with it dropping the connection and not connecting at all.
Just recently I noticed that as soon as any of the cordless phones in the house are turned  on (900 Mhz) the wireless connection will go down...even though the router is running at 2.4Ghz
By using the Linksys software I can see that both the router,  access point, as well as the laptop wireless card are all connected-they just wont communicate- even after the phones are turned off....most of the time the entire network has to be reset.
Overall I have found most of the link-sys stuff to be quite flaky even at the best of times..the trouble shooting software sucks too...

I  have the  WRT-54G and it works well. At home, I have my main PC in the basement hard-wired to it. My wife / son's PC upstairs  and my laptop both connect wireless and get excellent signal strength.  For general day-to-day use, it's rock solid and works well.

One peculiar issue though. If  I try do download torrents using my laptop (wireless) it seems to hog all the router's internal bandwidth.  Torrents will download very fast, but I can't surf from that PC, and my other PCs (both hardwired and wireless) will have trouble  communicating even with the router. I tried limiting the bandwidth of the torrent client, connection numbers, etc, but that did nothing. Once the problem appears, even stopping the torrent client won't solve the problem. Even once I stop the client, I still can't connect with the the laptop other PCs until I power down the router and restart it. I don't seem to have this problem with my hardwired computer though when using it to download torrents. I've tried configuring the router using its QoS settings to allocate lowest priority to the IP / MAC address of  laptop and putting the other computers to high priority. but still no joy.

I don't know what's wrong, but I think it may be time to get myself another router. I think this one may suffer some shortomcings like the WRK-54G and other consumer-level routers you speak of. It's not a show-stopper for me, as I rarely download anything on P2P networks. I tend to use them more to find old, rare stuff, so it's not something that happens often. But still, I'd like to be able to use it reliably regardless what I'm using it to. Due to the sparse sources for the stuff I'm looking for, it tends to take a long time to get a complete file, and it sucks having to shut down my download when I want to use any of the other computers on my network.

That is a known issue with WRTs, older ones at least.  You could try an alternative software load like Tomato, dd-wrt orOpenWRT.

Just some of my experience on this as an old techie.... Link.sys is awful to work with... I've used D-Link with better success but it too has issues. I now use US Robotics... it's pretty bullet proof.  Their new Maxg router pretty much sets up itself. I use two laptops as I can't be without one. My old girl used the USR PSMCIA card to connect without problem. When I bought my new laptop it had wireless in it.. Broadcom, and it had no problem hooking up with the USR router. You might want to try one some day.
