advanced advantage
« on: March 28, 2005, 12:42:14 pm »
What does any body know about ignition advancers. I'm told that 'Factory Pro' makes one for my R1 and it will smooth out my power curve and increase torque? It's inexpensive, and an easy install, but I'm not sure if I can still run pump fuel with this. :o
What is the theory behind advancing the ignition?

What they are doing is bringing in "spark" a little earlier (when the piston is still moving up) than stock.  You probably need to bump the gas to maybe 91 or 93 octane to compensate for a couple of degrees.   When the gas lights off, it will be closer to when the piston has just completed its up stroke, which means more power is produced.

I'd ask on the R1 forums if it works well for your bike.  For older bikes, it did, for sure.

Why don't you try a Power Commander? With custom or preset maps (whichever you prefer),you can change your fuel curve to smooth it out and maybe pick up a couple hidden ponies. Not too sure what the price difference would be between the ignition advancer and PC,though.

Unless I'm not as quick as I think I am... the '99 R1 is carbed.

Yep, it's carbed and RHINO if you buy the PCIIIr it already has ignition adjustment included in the unit. So there would be no price difference.
I know that if I were to raise my compression I would need to retard my ignition, and if I were to start running high octane fuel I would need to advance my ignition.

So you don't naturally use 91 or 94 octane fuel? I've heard mixed opinions on what grade gasoline people think they should use,and it's always been up in the air..I personally have always used premium, and 94 when I'm close to a Sunoco station. What do you guys/girls use????

The GSX-R calls for 90 octane, so I use 89-91 when I can get it.  175hp+ out of a 1L motor and it only needs 90 octane.  Bizarre.

Not necessarily true.  You can use a higher octane fuel, or the motor may not require it.  All depends.

Again, not necessarily true.  You would WANT to advance your ignition (and maybe even your cam timings) to take advantage of the higher octane fuel.
