Gearing
« on: May 17, 2005, 12:30:48 pm »
I want to change the gearing of my bike.   Someone told me I should go -1 and +3, and that way I can use the same chain without having to change the length.  But would I be alright to just go +2 in the back without changing the chain??

Yes it would be alright,I went down 1 in the front and 2 up in the rear. The bike worked really well.First of all do you need a new chain while your doing the change.

I am using the same chain, but I should have reworded my question. I was thinking of just going +2 in the back and leaving the stock up front.  Would I be alright??

 :)

Chain length can be pre-calculated by:
Taking the difference in the number of teeth being changed and dividing by 2.
(Round up or down to the nearest even link, if you have a remainder such as .5)

Example(Stock 919 gearing 16/43 going to 15/45)
16 + 43 = 59
15 + 45 = 60
60 -59 = 1 divded by 2 = 0.5(Round to the nearest even number)
If you start with a chain that is 112 links: NO change required!!

Grover how mechanical are you,It is really simple if you have tools. If you need a hand i can help. Some people say its better to change the front you will notice a bigger gain than 2 in the rear. ;D

Grover,
Hook up with rollingstone, he's done all that gearing changing on his RC-51, and they're supposed to be tricky bikes to work on. Plus he's got all the tools. ;D

I am mechanically inclined, I just have never done it before on a motorcycle.  I spent the morning taking some of the bike apart,  the only tool that I dont have is the socket for the front and the back.  I went today and ordered a new back tire and a new back sprocket. I already have the front one.

Thanks for the offer though... but I was just looking for some tips to watch out for...

Rollingstone, what are the odds of you being free in the morning??  I attempted the front sprocket tonight by myself, and well... I gave up too easily.  I needed a second hand, and maybe that impact would really come in handy.

Grover,

I must ask, is that picture "in your forum profile"  really you or is it someone else?  :)
