thanks.   should I have been able to link it to the calendar ?   

(I tried,  couldn't figure it out, then guessed it was an admin function)

Go to the Calendar and click on the day that you want the event to start on.  I believe it works for all users, sometimes it's hard to tell when you have an admin capable account.
