15 T Front Sprocket
« on: May 27, 2005, 12:01:09 am »
 8)

Just ordered a 15 tooth front sprocket for my bike. The stock setup is 16/43, I will loose about 30 km/h top speed but will gain a great deal of acceleration. Based on some of the info I received, I should be able to easily lift the front wheel with anything over 50% throttle in 1st gear and 2nd  :o
Unfortunatelly my speedo will be in error by about 15% but based on the added "fun factor" I'll live with it. It takes about 15 minutes to change sprockets so its easy enough to switch back and forth, my chain also does not need to be shortened which is good.

I'm thinking of doing 1 down front/2 up rear on my bike.   The only thing is, it already wheelies with ease right through third.  And a highside can ruin your day... :/

Then again I had a heck of a slide tonight out of the rear.  Dunno whether it was just the tires needing some more scrubbing or if there was some (unseen) sand.  It didn't make me uncomfortable, since it was gradual, but ewww...

Great mod,Oliver.Alot of guys over at 600rr.net are doing -1 on the front and they say it makes their RR a wheelie machine. As far as your speedo goes, you may have heard about a "Speedo Healer".As far as I know they are really cheap and will correct your speedometer so you know exactly when you're speeding by a cop.LOL..Also what people tend to forget is that while you re-gear your bike, not only are you knocking the speedo off,but you will also be showing alot more km's than you are actually putting on.This can be a problem if you try and sell your bike down the road.

Fixed by a Yellow Box.  $100.

If I do my sprockets, I'll get a YB.  Actually it's probably worthwhile anyways, since every bike I've ridden in the past five years has had a speedometer that was about 10% optimistic.

Great feedback Rhino.

Unless I am mistaken the -1 tooth on the front will give me a 15% error (under normal) in other words it will show me at 100 km/h when in actual fact I am going 85 km/h. Based on that theory I should be putting less kilometers on my bike and it would work to my advantage at time of resale.

I am not 100% sure, as to what I just wrote being correct so anyone who knows, please post to let me know.

P.S. I may have got my theory backwards. Wouldnt be the first time  ;)

Yep, other way around.  The bike thinks you've gone 100km when actually you've gone 85.

I dropped the front sprocket -2, and it really messed up the speedo.  When the speedo says 170 kM, I am only going 140kM. So I am adding an extra 30kM/hour to my mileage.  Not good for resale value...
