Carb Work..Who?
« on: July 11, 2005, 01:05:16 pm »
I'd like some opinions on who's the man for the job when it comes to carb tune-ups if you have any experience with different shops.I plan on doing most of the work myself because I enjoy this stuff, but I can't sync the carbs myself.I was thinking the guys over at K-Tec would probably do a good job for me.Any suggestions on carb cleaner/Acid I should use? As far as I remember, most people were letting their jets soak in an acid solution overnight in a small container to clean everything out properly.

Ross at K-Tec is your man, Rhino.  I've known him since the early 70's (as both a mechanic and a friend) and can vouch for his immeasurable talent in tuning just about anything with 2 wheels, especially anything to do with carb-related issues or problems.

He used to roadrace himself back in the day, so I'm sure he could probably help you out......

Give him a shout  ;D

Cheers,

Boog

Thanks,Boog.I definitely had Ross in mind, but I wanted another opinion on top of that. The only thing is,though, will Ross actually do it or would he have one of his dudes doing the work?

I've found that if I go in and ask him to "personally" take care of something for me, he'll be apt to do it.  That's something you'd have to discuss with him directly......

He's awfully busy, but it'd be well worth the effort to inquire about him doing it for you himself......

I was at KTec and spoke with Greg.I like doing business with these guys but I'm not sure if I want to spend $100 on the carbs just to have them cleaned..Is there anyone on this forum who's good with carbs? I need them stripped down and thoroughly cleaned.I blew out the pilot jets a little and put them back on the bike to see if it'd change anything and it did make a slight difference, but they need to be mint.Hope someone can help.

OUCH Rhino!

That sounds pretty dear for a simple carb cleaning.  I gotta wonder if that was a quote for taking them off your bike, cleaning them and then doing the re-install after the cleaning?  Removing them yourself and taking them in for a cleaning should be waaaay less than a C-note!!

I have another contact for you to try.  His name is Paul Dowker, ex 25 year man (master mechanic certified) from M+ who left the dealership to pursue other interests.  He does motorcycle and small engine repair out of his home now as a sideline.  Try him at 541-0287.  Tell him Boog sent you.  And it shouldn't be anywhere near a hundred bucks  ;)

Give him a shout.....

Good Luck!

Thanks man.I already bought some carb cleaner,so I think I'm going to try everything myself, and if it still doesn't run without choke,I'll give him a call..When I was in K-Tec,I told him that the carbs are already off the bike and all they'd have to do was clean them,no removal or install involved and I was told 1-1 1/2 hours to start with and there's a chance it would take longer..OUCH is right! I expected it to be maybe $40 or so tops.

Hey Boog:

Thanks for the heads-up on Paul ... he turned his wrench for 20+ years  on my Interceptor, Hurricane, and Blackbird ... never had a problem with his work, was disappointed he's left M+,  was wonderin' where he'd got to, and glad to hear he's still in the biz ... might give him a call ...

thanks again ... see ya at work!

cheers

I'm in the middle of my carb work now and it's not that bad, really.Does anyone know if I took an O-Ring out of one of the parts,if I could get the same size at Home Depot to replace all four?(1 for each carb)...I want to get this thing back together and I don't want to order expensive Yamaha O-Rings and have to wait for them.Carbs are using Factory Pro adjustable needles, heavy springs and I'm getting new emulsion tubes,as these ones are lightly worn.
