I was in Ottawa on Saturday evening, and had all day to ride back home to the Big Smoke so rather than go directly (I've always thought taking the long way on a bike is invariably the better way) I'd make a pleasant day of it.
So, after a light breakfast in the Byward Market (sipping on a coffee with a freshly baked Montreal style bagel, watching the vendors setting up and people out for an early morning stroll) I got out of downtown Ottawa quickly just before 10 a.m. along 417 to 49 (the second exit to 49 to go to Almonte) and rode through Almonte for the first time. Continued west on 16 to 511. That part of 16 was surprisingly nice. It looks perfectly straight on the map, but did have some very interesting curves and hills. First time this year on 511. Boy, what a hoot; virtually no traffic, and clear smooth pavement. I only scraped my floorboards a couple of times getting to Calabogie!
Went along the lake at Calabogie and came out on 508 near the lodge. 508, 68 and 71 were pretty rough, as I remembered them from last year, but still great riding. I stopped for gas and water at Griffith and continued south on 41 to Denbeigh and then west along 28 to that Maple Syrup & Pancake House at the bottom of the long hill just east of the intersection of 28 and 511. Great spot for breakfast or lunch, if you like pancakes and pure maple syrup at noon!
I continued west on 28, and then turned left on Dettlor Road (which has got some tight turns and blind crests) to 62. Went back north on 62 and continued west on 28 to 118. Now parts of 118 had fresh black top between 28 and Tory Hill. Great road and the sun was still shining, although I could see the weather coming towards me.
Took 503 to Gooderham and then 507 south to 36. Virtually no gravel anywhere, not much traffic and no police presence. A brisk ride and a few more millimetres shaved off my floor boards. But the weather was threatening. I felt the occasional drop of rain and it had cooled down considerably while riding on 507.
Continued south on 36 past Buckhorn to 23 and then turned right at Selwyn on to 20 to Bridgenorth. There were spots of rain there to, and it stayed cool, but still quite pleasant. The roads around Bridgenorth were wet, so it must have rained there a few minutes before I arrived. Timing was everything yesterday.
Continued west across the causeway on 14 and then south on 7 to Omeeme. I took Highway 7 west to the Mount Horeb road to Highway 35. I turned south on 35 to Ballyduff, and took Ballyduff Road through Lotus to the Townline, and continued west along Devitt's Road, across 57 on to 19 to Simcoe St. Just south of the Esso Station, I turned right along Coates Road (which is a real treat; steep hills and blind crests that really do take one's breath away) that becomes Townline Road west of Highway 12 to Lakeridge.
Went south on Lakeridge and west on 5 to Claremont. The Claremont Lions Club Rodeo was taking place on Sunday afternoon, so I went by but didn't stop as the parking lot was pretty well full and I did not feel like riding my bike across a grass field to park it. Continued west to 30 and then rode through Stouffville, stopping at a Timmie's for a coffee and cookie. From there, continued on the Stouffville Road to Kennedy Road, went through Unionville and said hello to some people who were hanging out and then rode home.
A great day for riding some 520 kms and only the threat of rain. Days like that don't come often enough, so I was glad I could take advantage of it.
