2006 Suzuki V-Strom 650
« on: February 13, 2006, 09:14:34 am »
Hi all,

I'm guessing I'm going to bug everyone to the point where no one answers any of my questions :)  But to all that have helped me thanks!  I'm now looking at the 2006 V-Strom 650.  I have 2 questions.  1 What do the experts think of this thing.  and 2 Why is the price $9K in Canada and only $7750 in the US?  (XE.com)  THat's a huge difference for the same bike.

Thanks everyone

Price differences are mostly based on buying power, US is a huge market where dealers purchase in higher volume. Also the US market is more aggressive and shipping to Canada is more expensive as well when importing in limited numbers. These are just a few examples but always expect to pay slightly more in our Canadian market.

Well...  I don't pretend to be an "expert" on anything but I ride a 2005 DL650. I put 10,200k on it since the last week of June last summer. It's one great bike as far as I am concerned. It is one you can sit on for hours on end and not get sore, it performs REALLY well on the road and while I don't recomend taking it into myd or deep trail stuff it handles logging roads and the like REALLY well  :P It corners very well for the height, (no chicken strips on my tires  ;D )

All in all a very capable bike... there is a reason they nearly never show up for sale used. Actually the 650 tends to be even better liked than the litre version.

Every review I have found for the DL650 has been very good. It runs the same engine as the SV650 with a little heavier crank shaft for more torque so a very strong motor that has been around for a while with a good history behind it.

And best of all...

The DL 650 V-strom is A BLAST TO DRIVE!!!!!!

Can you tell I like mine?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Wonderful bike.

As for the cost difference, multiply the U.S. cost by the exchange rate and it's pretty close to the Canadian price. How hard was that, now?

Actually no it's not.  According to XE.com 6,699.00 USD  = 7,741.48 CAD (Todays exchange rate) The MSRP on Suzuki.ca is 8999    .  $1257.52  difference.  A lot of money for a trip over the border.

Exchange is only part of the costs--what about duty and taxes when importing goods.....and what are the eligibility rules when it comes to vehicles? If it were that straight forward everyone would be buying in the states, usually there are restrictions to protect industries/sales.

I was just wondering why the prices were so different.  I know that with cars there isn't that much discreapncy so I assumed bikes would be the same.  Just in case you were wondering Dodge Caravan  USD 19095 (base)  CAD 19998.  Acutally less that the US.  But thanks everyone for you're help.  I think I'm gonna start saving up for the V-Strom.  Shaman I'll need some riding lesson :)
