exhaust pipe
« on: February 27, 2005, 10:49:52 am »
Ok,  I know how Shaman fixes this problem - he buys a new bike !   ;D

But I'm trying to re-furb the chromed exhaust pipe on my bike - want to remove
the blue-ish discolouration on the last foot or so of the pipe.  Can this be
done ?   Who ?  How ?

Also,  the header pipe(s) are "browned" out too -  will one of those high heat
auto/manifold paints stay on this hot spot ?   Or will it just burn off ?

Nah.  I wanted to keep my 2003!  But the mods I wanted to do to it, after consideration, were almost as expensive as getting a new bike... one that fits me better, has a slipper clutch and a gear indicator (handier than you might think on a bike with 80lb/ft of torque).

Here's the problem... it will probably come right back.  Unless you have a two-wall construction that is designed to stop bluing, removing what you have is likely just a temporary fix.  Someone else will have to give you information on taking it off... I myself would never do that, I like the look.

Same thing... you can paint it with high heat paint but it will discolour.  If you really don't like the looks of heat discolouration, your only real avenue is to get a dual wall pipe.

Edit: I thought about this one a little more... and you might be able to jet a little richer to keep the blueing down.  But this isn't a sure thing according to a mechanic I asked this aft... and of course doesn't help you in trying to clean off the blueing in the first place.

WRT the browned-out exhaust header.....you may want to consider a ceramic coating.  I had the SS headers on my VTR coated (silver) two years ago.  Looks like polished aluminum, cleans with a wet rag, will not discolour.  Inquiries at local machine shops or high performance garages should point you to a reliable local source.

Good Luck .

Well,  it looks like there are a couple ways to do this.

1. $$$$ remove header pipe from bike and send to Jet-Hot.

http://www.jet-hot.com/

2. $ - remove pipe,  sand/sandblast to bare metal,  and apply 1 can of black BBQ paint.  Polish to shine.

    repeat next year if/as needed..

I have Jet-Hot coating on the headers for my Formula.  They promise it will never let rust through, but they lie... :)  It is a good process, however, and your pipes will run cooler on the surface (and the gases will be hotter, which makes for less emissions).  They also did slightly discolour for me in racing conditions, I can't say how they will be for you.

I thought you wanted to keep a chrome look, my bad.

Was it done by PO,  or  did you have to send the part to the Jet_hot plant in Pascagoula MS ?

I bought the headers pre-coated, so I'm not sure what plant did them.  There are a number of similar coatings out now, fyi.  It might pay to ask around.

Here's the Formula:

I have a buddy who had his Vance and Hines header on his FJ ceramic coated as well as some calipers for his Mustang. I believe it was in Canada. I'll find out and let you know.

I had the headers for my VTR done by a shop in Ottawa.......cost for Ceramicoating the two headers, collector and all clamps silver was just over $100. IIRC.

Two years and 30,000+ kms later they still look like they did when I brought them home.  Dont expect a chrome-like finish tho, more like polished aluminum. (Which is still better than rusty brown SS)!!

Ok, my buddy had his header done out of Windsor, I think it was called High Performance Coatings(HPC). I'm still waiting for more info.
